Herrings

20th-century French School oil on canvas titled on the back, "Harengs au torchon," (herring and tea towel) and signed G. Delatouche, dated 1946 in the lower left.

The canvas has controlled texture without visible excess. The composition is resolutely modern in its geometry, reliefs and shadows. The herring and tea towel are a quintessential French country kitchen scene, bathed in light, further supported by the clay grey and linen white colors. The fish look like they have just been poured out of the fishing basket, spilled among the onions. A unique and singular painting, reminiscent of life in rural France, and telling the story of a delicious meal to come.
