Le Chemin

$1,150.00

20th-century oil painting on wooden panel, monogrammed José Wolff (1885–1964) in the lower left. Painted on both sides. The reverse also features a landscape, likely an oil study.

A view of a country road displaying strong Post-Impressionist and Belgian Luminist influences. The foreground is framed by a series of slender, leafy trees lining the path, which runs through the center of the composition and acts as a visual thread, guiding the eye into the landscape. Beyond, the vegetation gradually opens beneath a broad sky rendered in soft pastel tones.

The brushwork is short, energetic, and confidently applied, with pronounced impasto enlivening the clouds and foliage. Contrasts between organic forms and the strong linear rhythm of the trees reveal an underlying sense of structure beneath the painting's spontaneous appearance. As in much of José Wolff's work, light plays a central role, animating the landscape and enriching its vibrant palette. Presented in a modern frame, the painting has a fresh, luminous presence well suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.

About the artist

José Wolff (1885–1964) was a Belgian painter born in Liège, where he also died. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Liège under Évariste Carpentier and Adrien de Witte before continuing his training in Paris in the studio of Fernand Cormon.

Between 1902 and 1909, he lived in Paris, where he encountered several leading avant-garde artists, including Amedeo Modigliani and Albert Gleizes. He later traveled extensively through Spain, particularly Andalusia, which became an important source of inspiration.

Wolff is best known for his landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and figure paintings. He is associated with the Walloon Luminist movement, the Belgian branch of Impressionism that emphasized the effects of light and color. The landscapes of the Ardennes, especially the valleys of the Ourthe and Amblève rivers, became some of his most characteristic subjects.

Throughout his career, Wolff exhibited in Liège, Paris, Granada, Brussels, and Antwerp. In 1948, he was appointed Knight of the Order of Leopold II. Today, his work is represented in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts of Liège and the University of Liège.
