La Lavandière

Fine art from France: A large scale painting on canvas, signed Paul Sébilleau (1847-1907). This scene takes place in the countryside at the edge of a stream near a village. We can see a washerwoman along the bank washing a pile of laundry. A powerful light emerges from the work supported by this sky with eggshell hues and the play of contrasting shadows in the foreground. Time freezes in this scene somewhere in the south of France.

About the artist: Paul Sébilleau is part of the class of Bordeaux landscape painters who were influenced by Corot and Courbet. The Gironde, Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, and the Dordogne were his favorite subjects. Sébilleau exhibited in Parisian salons, Bordeaux and in the USA.
