$1,400.00

20th-century oil on hardboard by Ludovic Janssen (1888–1954), signed lower left. The reverse bears the handwritten title Printemps Campine (Spring in the Kempen), a countersignature by the artist, and the inscription "Rue des Églantiers, Liège," likely the address of his studio. The painting depicts the Belgian Kempen in early spring, a region in northeastern Belgium celebrated by early 20th-century landscape painters for its rich natural beauty.

A peaceful view of the Belgian countryside featuring a broad path or open meadow in the foreground, bordered by rows of trees and a handful of red- and brown-roofed houses. Above, a vast sky occupies nearly three-quarters of the composition, becoming the true focal point of the painting.

The brushwork is bold and expressive, with generous impasto enlivening the foreground. The sky is animated by energetic, comma-like strokes that echo the Post-Impressionist technique found throughout the composition. The palette embraces the colors of spring, from the varied greens and ochres of the ground to the delicate pinks of budding branches. Through the interplay of texture, color, and light, the artist creates a landscape that feels both vibrant and organic.

The painting conveys the freshness and optimism of early spring while maintaining a refined decorative presence. Its frame complements the composition beautifully, with a fluted gilt inner molding that provides an elegant contrast to the cool, luminous palette. A timeless piece equally suited to a contemporary or traditional interior.

About the artist:

Ludovic Janssen (1888–1954) was a Belgian painter, draftsman, illustrator, and decorator, born and deceased in Liège. He studied under Évariste Carpentier at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Liège, where he developed an early specialization in landscape painting.

During the 1920s, his many views of the Kempen earned him the nickname "Painter of the Kempen." An exceptionally active artist, he exhibited for more than forty years with numerous Belgian artistic societies, most notably the Cercle Royal des Beaux-Arts de Liège, where he participated regularly in exhibitions between 1913 and 1954. His work was also shown in Liège, Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Verviers, Spa, and Paris, and several of his paintings were acquired by the Belgian State as early as the 1920s.

A dedicated plein-air painter, Janssen worked directly from nature, spending long periods in the Kempen, the Ardennes, along the Belgian coast, in the Netherlands, and in France. His landscapes are distinguished by their free, expressive brushwork, Post-Impressionist sensibility, and remarkable ability to capture atmosphere and changing light.

Throughout his career, he also exhibited at the Galerie d'Art du Journal de Liège, Galerie La Meuse, and Galerie Lutétia in Liège, as well as the prestigious Galerie Georges Petit in Paris, one of France's leading galleries of the period. His work was also presented in several important exhibitions at the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Liège (La Boverie).
