Original frame signed A.Delmere (1802-1873), dated 1850, during the Second Empire. Period where censorship is rife in the arts and letters. Preached by the Church, the return to moral order is supported by Empress Eugenie. The prayer beads are prominently displayed on this beautiful portrait of a pious woman in a white bonnet with bridles. This charming small format responds perfectly to the order of the time when change is looming. Napoleon III, allowed the opening of a "Salon des refusés" (Salon of Rejects) where Courbet and the future impressionists exhibit.

  • Condition: The canvas has veins and micro holes due to age. Canvas slightly curved on the left (0.5 ") at the level of the right arm. There is a vertical linear tear (1-2") on the other arm. The sculpted frame is original has linear losses at the level of the outer frame: at the bottom (5 "), at the top: 2 losses (1.1" and 3.9 "). A last loss on the left outer frame of (0.7") . Despite its shortcomings, the frame keeps a nice overall line and does not impact the harmony with the canvas.
