Portait Napolitain

$3,000.00

19th-century Neapolitan School fine art oil painting on canvas, signed lower right F. Ricca (19th century) and dated “90” for 1890. A fragment of a partially torn label, likely from a former exhibition, remains affixed in the upper left corner.

A deeply atmospheric interior scene depicting a standing male figure in profile, dressed in a loose work jacket, worn trousers, and weathered shoes, with a soft green cap typical of 19th-century Neapolitan genre painting. Around him, the sparse surroundings, a wicker chair, terracotta vessels, onions, and kitchen tools fading into shadow, reinforce the painting’s focus on humble daily life and quiet labor.

The figure appears absorbed in the preparation of a meal, stirring ingredients within a terracotta bowl atop a rough wooden table. The scene is remarkable for its restraint and dignity, elevating an ordinary domestic moment into something contemplative and timeless.

The painting is executed with controlled and highly observant brushwork, revealing careful attention to texture, light, and material. The folds of fabric, the worn wood of the table, and the matte surfaces of the pottery are all rendered with subtle realism. A distinctly Caravaggioesque handling of light draws focus toward the figure before dissolving gradually into darkness along the edges of the composition. The restrained palette further enhances the sense of intimacy and direct observation.

Nothing in the composition feels incidental. The work belongs firmly within the tradition of the 19th-century Neapolitan School, where artists turned away from heroic or mythological subjects in favor of naturalistic scenes rooted in the realities of rural and working-class Italian life. Rather than spectacle, these painters sought beauty in sincerity, atmosphere, and the quiet dignity of everyday existence.

This is a particularly strong example of Neapolitan fine art painting from the late 19th century, both technically refined and emotionally grounded.

About the frame:

The painting is housed in an imposing 19th-century gold leaf presentation frame with deep relief vegetal motifs, scrolling decoration, and stylized leaves, reflecting decorative traditions inherited from classical styles and the taste of the Napoléon III period. Its unusual scale and depth suggest it was intended to elevate and formally present the work, in the manner of Salon exhibition frames used for important genre paintings and museum display.

  • Signature: Yes, F. Ricca (19th century).
  • Creation date: 1890.
  • Conditions: A fragment of an old exhibition label, partially torn, is affixed to the upper left corner of the work. A few minor marks are visible on the canvas, along with traces from a previous framing, without affecting the overall reading of the piece. The antique wooden frame shows losses on the reverse and along the upper left outer edges (not visible from the front but noticeable from above), as well as a loss of molding at the center of the right vertical side. The missing section has not been replaced but has been re-gilded, and does not retract from the overall visual balance. Overall, the piece remains in very satisfactory condition considering its age, weight, and size.
