Dutch Countryside

$750.00

Oil on canvas by Dutch painter Evert Moll (1878-1955), signed lower left, with the signature now concealed beneath the frame. The painting depicts a farmhouse in the countryside, probably in the Netherlands, one of the subjects Moll painted alongside the river, harbor, and coastal scenes for which he is particularly well known.

The composition is built through a succession of simple planes. In the foreground, a vivid green meadow forms a broad horizontal band, behind which the farmhouse buildings appear almost absorbed by the surrounding vegetation. The dark masses of the trees occupy the center of the landscape and contrast strongly with the pale sky, which opens broadly across the upper part of the canvas.

The brushwork is particularly present. Moll works with broad, free strokes, sometimes almost comma-like in form, allowing the gesture and texture of the paint to remain visible. Forms are not precisely described but built through masses of color. As one moves closer to the canvas, the landscape breaks down into individual strokes of color and the painter’s gesture becomes more distinct.

This freedom of execution gives a wonderful sense of life and movement to an otherwise very quiet scene. The palette remains restrained and natural, with a beautiful harmony between the darker tones of the vegetation, the more vivid green of the meadow, and the pale sky. The antique gilt frame brings additional light to the work and creates an elegant contrast with the simplicity of the landscape.

About the Artist

Evert Moll (1878-1955) was a Dutch painter born in Voorburg and died in The Hague. Largely self-taught, he was in contact with Willem Maris (1844-1910), an important figure of the Hague School, and remained close to this pictorial tradition himself. Moll worked in the Netherlands as well as in London and Paris before settling in The Hague in 1930. He was also a member of Pulchri Studio, an important artists’ association in the city.

Moll painted landscapes and also developed a significant body of work devoted to rivers, harbors, and maritime scenes, particularly around Rotterdam. He was also a draftsman and printmaker and worked as an art dealer. His works are held in multiple institutions' collections, including Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and the Zuiderzeemuseum in Enkhuizen.
