Bourges Cathedral

$750.00

Oil on canvas by François Sage (1901–1929), signed and countersigned on the reverse, titled La Cathédrale de Bourges and dated 1927. The artist transports us to the heart of the Bourges marshes in the early 20th century, where Saint-Étienne Cathedral, the official name of Bourges Cathedral, appears on the horizon, discreetly overlooking the cultivated plots and waterways.

The way the composition is arranged is particularly striking. A succession of slender poplar trees rises vertically across the canvas, immediately giving rhythm to the landscape. Positioned on different planes, they guide the eye from the near bank toward the heart of the marshes and naturally give depth to the scene. Between them, cultivated plots, canals, and several boats gradually come into view.

At the center, a boat loaded with produce is steered by two figures, while other boats travel along the different waterways. These details bring the landscape to life and reflect the market gardening activity that historically characterized the Bourges marshes, which were divided into cultivated plots and navigated by flat-bottomed boats used to transport people, equipment, and produce.

Vegetation plays an essential role in the pictorial treatment. The trees and foliage are worked with thick, textured brushstrokes, at times almost sculpted through the paint, while the cultivated plots and surfaces of the water are treated with smoother, more horizontal strokes. This contrast between texture and flatter areas of color emphasizes the geometry of the composition and naturally distinguishes the different elements of the landscape.

The palette, dominated by muted greens, blues, grays, and a few earthy tones, creates a cool and contemplative atmosphere. The overcast sky diffuses a soft light across the entire scene, while the water reflects the colors of the landscape in lighter tones. A few brighter touches appear among the crops and in the boat’s cargo, subtly enlivening this harmony of cool colors.

Saint-Étienne Cathedral stands at the center of the horizon, yet Sage chooses not to make it an overwhelming presence. Seen from the marshes, it becomes part of a living landscape in which the cultivated plots, waterways, poplar trees, and boats all play an essential role. The monument thus becomes the distant focal point of a composition in which the everyday life of the marshes occupies almost as much space as the cathedral itself.

About the artist:

François Sage (1901–1929) was a French painter and wood engraver from the Nivernais region. Despite his particularly short career, his work reveals an interest in the landscapes of his region as well as urban and industrial environments.

He also produced wood engravings devoted to the Nivernais and Nevers, and his work is notably listed in Maurice Bardin’s Dictionnaire des peintres, sculpteurs et graveurs nivernais du XVe au XXe siècle, a biographical reference book documenting painters, sculptors, and engravers associated with the Nièvre region of France from the 15th to the 20th century.
