Italian Bouquet

$1,100.00

19th-century oil on hardboard, this floral still life draws inspiration from the great tradition of Italian Baroque flower painting of the 17th century. A generous bouquet is arranged in an ornate metal footed bowl with gilt decoration. The composition stands out against a dark background, giving the work a particularly strong graphic presence.

The richness of the bouquet contrasts with the remarkable balance of its composition. The flowers extend in different directions, some fully open, others still in bud or bending downward. This variety brings a wonderful sense of movement to the composition, while the repetition of colors gives the whole its coherence. Colors echo from one flower to another, creating a true sense of harmony within this floral abundance.

The handling of the paint contributes fully to this balance. The brushwork is controlled, shaping the volumes with precision while maintaining a relatively smooth surface, without pronounced impasto. Particular attention is given to the variety of flowers and the modeling of their petals, whose nuances and transitions of color distinguish the different species. This refinement of execution recalls the treatment of Italian floral still lifes of the 17th century.

Chiaroscuro also plays an essential role. The deeply dark background brings the flowers forward and emphasizes their volume, while the light gradually reveals their colors and forms. In the lower part of the composition, a subtle gradation in the background, darker on the left and slightly lighter toward the right, introduces a discreet sense of depth. The metal bowl, with its silver reflections, provides the transition between the bouquet and this darker space.

The work is presented in an elegant antique gilt frame, whose moldings alternate between golden tones and darker lines, extending the contrasts and reinforcing the overall harmony of the composition.
