Dents du Midi

$690.00

This oil painting on wood panel, dated 1901 and inscribed “Dents du Midi” on the reverse, depicts an Alpine landscape dominated by the Dents du Midi, an imposing mountain range in the Swiss Alps, located in the canton of Valais. Overlooking the Rhône Valley, its peaks form one of the most iconic panoramas of the region.

The composition seems to bring together two landscapes in one. In the foreground, a small hamlet of houses and farm buildings appears among the trees. Beyond this scene rises the immense mountain range, occupying nearly two-thirds of the composition. This contrast in scale gives the landscape a remarkable sense of depth and vastness.

The foreground is built up with small brushstrokes and patches of color to depict the vegetation and buildings, while the mountains and sky alternate between smooth surfaces and more textured passages. These variations in the paint surface enhance the perspective and distinguish the different planes of the composition.

A soft, almost veiled light envelops the peaks and distant slopes. The contrast is beautifully controlled between the bright light illuminating the misty mountains and the more defined outlines of the darker hamlet.

A beautiful view that transports us to the foot of one of the most impressive mountain ranges in the Swiss Alps, on a sunny day in the early 20th century.

The painting is presented in an original Napoleon III period frame, made of gilded wood and stucco, decorated with Greek key patterns, beaded moldings, and egg-and-dart ornamentation. Its aged gilding and decorative details lend a sense of history to the ensemble while subtly enhancing the luminosity of the painting.

  • Overall Size: 11" × 13.8" / 28cm × 35cm.
  • Size without the frame: 7.5" × 10.6" / 19cm × 27cm.
  • Country of origin: France.
  • Signature: Anonymous.
  •  Creation date: 1901.
  • Conditions: The painting shows some signs of age, including minor surface marks and a few small scratches. There are also some areas of paint loss in the sky, which blend naturally with the atmospheric effect of the misty mountain range.
The antique Napoleon III frame, dating from the mid-19th century, shows some losses to the beaded decoration along its inner edge, which has been regilded in the past. A few small sections of the Greek key ornamentation are also missing, with areas of partial regilding left unfinished. Some losses are also visible along the outer moldings.
The frame bears the marks of its age, which contribute to its authentic antique charm.
