The Countryside

Early 20th-century oil on hardboard depicting a countryside landscape in a simplified style with Impressionist influences.

The composition stands out for its simplicity and the vigor of its brushwork. The trees and vegetation are built up with energetic, generously loaded brushstrokes, their raised texture clearly visible on the painted surface. The strokes, relatively uniform in size but applied in varying directions, create movement throughout the composition and bring the scene to life.

This textured brushwork contrasts with the treatment of the sky, painted in smoother, almost textureless areas of color. The deliberately limited palette emphasizes the contrast between the lighter areas and the darker shades of green. In the background, a few loosely sketched forms reveal the roof of a house, subtly integrated into the landscape.

The painting has a lovely spontaneity, enhanced by its economy of means and the freedom of the artist's brushwork.

It is presented in a lovely lightweight wooden frame with gold and dark blue finishes, whose tones complement the painting's colors and the warmer shades of the foreground particularly well.

The painting was acquired in Normandy and most likely depicts a landscape from the region.
