Rouen

$1,200.00

Oil on canvas painted in the 1920s by French artist François Sage (1901–1929), depicting a panoramic view of Rouen and its cathedral from an elevated vantage point.

This large-scale composition stands out for its Impressionist approach and the richness of its atmosphere. The brushstrokes, varied in direction and thickness, build up the different layers of the city and give the painting a beautiful sense of movement and vibrancy. The particularly successful treatment of light relies on a subtle distribution of brighter areas, guiding the eye through the composition.

The right half of the painting is punctuated by factory chimneys, their smoke gradually blending into the atmosphere. They contribute to the slightly misty effect that envelops the horizon and gives the view a wonderful sense of depth. Below, the bridges crossing the Seine, the barges, and the many details of the urban architecture reveal the artist's careful attention to the life of the city.

In the distance, the distinctive silhouette of Rouen Cathedral emerges delicately. Its tall spire pierces the sky, while its contours, rendered in subtle variations of color, gradually take shape in the light.

Beyond its pictorial qualities, this painting transports us to Rouen in the 1920s, a city still marked by the First World War but already experiencing the industrial transformations and excitement of the Roaring Twenties. From this elevated viewpoint, we seem to discover the city before even entering it, taking in its architecture, its activity, and its atmosphere all at once.

The painting is presented in an imposing and elegant gilded frame, whose moldings bring considerable character to the whole and beautifully enhance the light of the composition.

About the artist:

François Sage (1901–1929) was a French painter and wood engraver from the Nivernais region. Despite his particularly short career, his work reveals an interest in the landscapes of his region as well as urban and industrial environments.

He also produced wood engravings devoted to the Nivernais and Nevers, and his work is notably listed in Maurice Bardin’s Dictionnaire des peintres, sculpteurs et graveurs nivernais du XVe au XXe siècle, a biographical reference book documenting painters, sculptors, and engravers associated with the Nièvre region of France from the 15th to the 20th century.
