The Avenue

$840.00

Early 20th-century French School oil painting on hardboard, executed in a Post-Impressionist style.

This urban scene is distinguished by its particularly expressive handling of paint, with texture playing an essential role. The generous impasto and brushstrokes, probably applied partly with a palette knife, build up the forms through layers of color and texture.

The composition has a strong graphic quality. The street, lined with buildings and rows of trees, draws the eye toward a vanishing point at the foot of an imposing building with monumental architecture. The lines of perspective, reinforced by the movement of the brushstrokes, give the painting a striking, almost hypnotic sense of dynamism.

The light is particularly beautiful, enhanced by the contrast between the bright sky and the deeper tones of the lower half of the painting. It catches the facades and rooftops, whose textured surfaces further emphasize the interplay of light.

The painting is presented in an original Napoleon III period frame of ebonized wood, decorated with a frieze of gilded floral motifs and fine moldings. The frame bears the marks of time, adding to its authentic antique charm. Its refined decoration contrasts with the spontaneous brushwork while beautifully enhancing the painting’s luminosity.

  • Overall Size: 19.3" × 14.2" / 49 × 36 cm.
  • Size without the frame: 15.7" × 10.2" / 40 × 26 cm.
  • Country of origin: France.
  • Signature: Anonymous.
  • Creation date: Early 20th century.
  • Conditions: The hardboard panel has a very slight bow, which is barely noticeable to the eye and does not affect the overall presentation of the painting. The paint surface is in good overall condition, with a few small areas of paint loss along the edges, consistent with previous framing.
The original antique frame shows some losses along several of its edges, which have been touched up in black. A small dent, approximately 0.3" (8 mm) in diameter, is visible on the left vertical molding, around its midpoint. There are also some losses along the outer edges of the frame that are not visible from the front.
