The Village

$1,350.00

Large-scale oil on canvas by Belgian painter José Wolff (1885–1964), signed in the lower right, depicting a village nestled within a rolling landscape.

The composition offers an elevated view from a rocky outcrop overlooking a river. On the left, a stone bridge connects the two banks and draws the eye toward a village, its houses clustered around a church with a slender steeple. Beyond the buildings, the landscape opens onto a succession of fields and hills stretching toward the horizon.

The painting stands out for its free, rapid, and expressive brushwork. The strokes, sometimes rich in texture, are juxtaposed in energetic, spontaneous touches that give the landscape a remarkable intensity. The earthy palette, enriched with subtly nuanced greens and blues, creates a particularly appealing harmony of color. Combined with the generous dimensions of the canvas, it lends the scene a contemplative, almost panoramic quality.

Despite this freedom of execution, José Wolff maintains a strong sense of structure and volume. The architecture of the houses, the vertical lines of the church steeple, and the arches of the bridge remain clearly defined. The reflections on the river, rendered with softer, more fragmented brushwork, add another dimension to this Impressionist-inspired approach.

Acquired in Belgium, the painting most likely depicts a landscape from the country, possibly a village in the Belgian Ardennes, in the Liège region. This location, however, remains to be confirmed.

The work is presented in a beautiful gilded frame with a taupe-brown outer border. Its tones naturally complement the painting's earthy palette, enhancing the overall harmony of the composition.

About the artist

José Wolff (1885–1964) was a Belgian painter born in Liège, where he also died. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Liège under Évariste Carpentier and Adrien de Witte before continuing his training in Paris in the studio of Fernand Cormon.

Between 1902 and 1909, he lived in Paris, where he encountered several leading avant-garde artists, including Amedeo Modigliani and Albert Gleizes. He later traveled extensively through Spain, particularly Andalusia, which became an important source of inspiration.

Wolff is best known for his landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and figure paintings. He is associated with the Walloon Luminist movement, the Belgian branch of Impressionism that emphasized the effects of light and color. The landscapes of the Ardennes, especially the valleys of the Ourthe and Amblève rivers, became some of his most characteristic subjects.

Throughout his career, Wolff exhibited in Liège, Paris, Granada, Brussels, and Antwerp. In 1948, he was appointed Knight of the Order of Leopold II. His work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts of Liège and the University of Liège.
