Orchard View

19th-century Belgian school oil painting on wooden panel signed A Le Mayeur for Adrien Le Mayeur De Merpres (1844-1923) in the bottom left and dated (18)84 in the bottom right. The artist's stamp is located on the back. The work has a little texture to the touch.

This orchard scene is depicted with expressive, generous, and textured brushstrokes that overflow with energy. The Impressionist technique adds a delightful feeling of motion to the arrangement. The thick varnish applied to the paint has effectively protected the vibrant autumn colors. The sculpted frame, embellished with yellow ocher gilding, harmonizes perfectly with the tones of the landscape.

About the artist:

Adrien Le Mayeur De Merpres (1844-1923), a student of Isidore Meyers in Hamme-Driegoten from around 1877, later joined the Dendermond School with Meyers and Jacques Rosseels. He primarily painted sunny landscapes and captivating seascapes along the Belgian coast, featuring a low horizon and restless clouds. Occasionally, he dabbled in pointillism. His skill in poetically depicting water was lauded by De Taeye, while L. de Veyran praised his impactful portrayal of a gray, sandy sea crashing against a pier. As a testament to his achievements, he was knighted in the Order of Leopold.
