Paysage d'Artois

$700.00

20th-century oil painting on canvas, signed lower right by M. G. Lesage for Maurice Eugène Lesage (19th–20th century). The reverse bears a label with the artist's name, the address of his studio in Tourcoing, and the title of the work, Paysage d'Artois (Landscape of Artois). Artois is a historic region in northern France, corresponding largely to the present-day Pas-de-Calais department.

A striking rural landscape following a winding path that weaves almost abstractly between a fenced field on one side and a pond bordered by trees on the other. Towering trees, with their twisting, almost calligraphic trunks and brilliant yellow foliage, frame the composition before it opens onto a soft, atmospheric horizon of fields and distant vegetation.

Painted with remarkable freedom, the work borders on abstraction while remaining firmly rooted in the landscape. Broad, energetic brushstrokes and generous texture take precedence over precise description, encouraging the viewer to experience the scene through movement, color, and emotion rather than detail. The organic forms and expressive handling of the paint create an immediate sense of vitality and immersion.

Although the palette is thoughtfully balanced, it is the expressive brushwork that defines the composition. The painting possesses a distinctly modern character, transforming a familiar countryside view into an evocative and highly decorative work.

  • Overall Size: 24" x 19.9" / 61cm x 50,5cm.
  • Size without the frame: 26.8" x 22.4" / 68cm x 57cm.
  • Country of origin: France.
  • Signature: M. G. Lesage for Maurice Eugène Lesage (19th–20th century).
  • Creation date: Early 20th century.
  • Conditions: The painting presents several areas of paint loss. The most significant losses, located in the sky, have been partially restored but remain visible as slightly lighter marks measuring approximately 2.3" in length. These restorations are situated near the right edge of the landscape and on the smaller tree directly below. Two areas of paint loss remain unrestored on the left side of the composition. The first, measuring approximately 0.5", is located near the center-left section of the foremost tree. The second is positioned above the fence and extends over approximately 1.9". The painting also shows losses and small holes in three of the corners, resulting from a previous framing arrangement. The frame presents traces of wear and minor impacts along its edges and sides, consistent with age and use.
