19th-century oil painting on wood panel, signed R. Sicheffermeyer (19th century) lower right.

A captivating portrait evoking the world of late 19th-century artisans, depicting a man dressed in a red buttoned jacket and work cap. He wears leather trousers or a leather apron, suggesting he may be a blacksmith, farrier, or another skilled tradesman.

Rather than portraying a specific profession, the artist appears to celebrate the dignity of craftsmanship, capturing a quiet moment of rest as the man lights his pipe while seated before the open tobacco pouch he has just used. With his elbows resting on the table, his eyelids lowered, and his back slightly hunched, he seems completely at ease.

His weathered hands, particularly the pronounced middle finger, reinforce the impression of a man accustomed to years of physical labor. The painting is executed with a careful, realist approach, using controlled, even brushstrokes with very little visible texture. Light is handled with subtlety, gently modeling the sitter's features and lending warmth to the scene. The textures in his beard, and folds in his coat reflect the skill of the painter. It is a refined example of 19th-century genre painting, reflecting the growing artistic interest in everyday workers and rural life during the period.

The magnificent antique wooden frame, richly carved with acanthus leaves and scrolling foliage, provides a striking contrast to the simplicity of the subject. Its classic gilding and unique carvings, with the interior gold leaf trim create a harmonious and elegant home for this hard working man.
