Les Voiliers

$1,300.00
19th-century oil painting on canvas, signed Samuel Frère (1845–1931) lower right.

An exceptional harbor scene depicting the port of Rouen, with a group of sailboats drifting across reflective waters. The muted rose and ochre sails stand out against the pale horizon, while a small steamboat appears on the right, adding a subtle industrial contrast to the otherwise calm maritime composition. In the distance, the city of Rouen dissolves into a hazy band of light along the horizon line.

The painting is handled with a refined and softened brushwork characteristic of late Impressionism. Light moves across the surface of the Seine through layered reflections, tonal variations, and restrained shifts in color. This sensitivity is especially visible in the treatment of the water, where pale pinks, blues, and silvers shimmer across the canvas. The sky is approached in a similar way, with loose textured passages conveying atmosphere and filtered afternoon light. The palette is subtle and harmonious throughout, capturing the quiet rhythm of Rouen’s working river at the turn of the century.

Rouen has long inspired painters for its relationship between water, industry, and light. Situated along the Seine and historically connected to maritime trade through tidal influence, the city attracted artists such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, who were fascinated by its shifting atmosphere and reflective surfaces.
