This compact, dark forested painting offers more than initially meets the eye. In the Barbizon style, one must look closer to discern the detailed complexity of the undergrowth and observe all the colors and details hidden within the darkness of the palette. The sky is animated, and beneath the trees, we glimpse peaceful meadows, perhaps losing their last light at sunset.
