Saint-Gervais
20th-century oil painting on wood signed Lydia Sergueli (20th century). On the reverse, written in pencil, is “Saint-Gervais-la-Forêt” a village near Blois, in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
A countryside scene painted with lovely energy, where we can make out bare trees standing out against a nuanced, grey sky. In the background, several orange roofs appear below the branches, adding a touch of warmth to the landscape. The paint is worked in impasto, creating depth around the vegetation and sky of Saint Gervais la Forêt.
An unusually long format highlights the horizon line and accentuates a sense of calm. The work is in very good condition despite a few discreet marks due to the age of the panel.
Lydia Sergueli is not well documented but her work attests to a personal sensibility and mastery of her medium.
