20th century oil on canvas signed A. Siebenthal for Adolphe De Siebenthal (1895-1958) in the lower right corner and dated 1945 on the back. The painting bears the stamp of the “Aux Arts A Perrier,” a gallery in Geneva. The work likely comes from around the Swiss Alps.

A beautiful landscape, rich in summer light and hues, painted with soft brushstrokes and dabs of color that evoke elevation. The trees are the quiet subject of the painting, catching light at varying degrees, and illuminating colors as such. The background of the painting, starting at the line of shrubs and taller trees, begins to descend into blue, which becomes progressively lighter as it travels up the mountain as a shadow, and into the bright sky and clouds.

About the artist: 

Adolphe de Siebenthal was a Swiss painter, born in 1895 and died in 1958. He worked as both a teacher and a painter.

He was a member of the Société des peintres, sculpteurs et architectes suisses (SPSAS), a Swiss professional artists’ association founded in the 19th century, organizing exhibitions and representing painters, sculptors, and architects in Switzerland.

He regularly took part in exhibitions held at the Musée Rath in Geneva, within the framework of the SPSAS, from the 1930s until his death.
