Profile in Rouge
Original French Painting: French School oil painting on canvas. Virgin in profile circa 1900.
The canvas has a smooth finish on its surface with a shiny, weathered appearance. This is a religious representation, created in the international Gothic style. The technique used on this canvas is the same that was used in the Middle Ages, that of Gothic linearity where one detaches with a contour line the character and the background, to achieve isolation without any volume. Light is spare, except across the neck as if coming from a light behind the woman, and the colors are symbols here: the red for Charity, the white of the collar for Faith.
