Moulin Noir
20th-century oil on canvas by Raoul P. T. Dosque (1860–1937), signed on the left.
The work is titled Le Moulin Noir. It depicts a 12th-century water mill located in the Médoc region near Bordeaux, in the town of Blanquefort. The title and location are noted on the reverse of the canvas and the stretcher.
This painting is simply beautiful, a strong example of Impressionism from around the turn of the century. The brushstrokes read like small serifs of color, each placed with intention. Much of the composition is devoted to the river, the Jalle de Blanquefort, whose surface gathers nearly every hue in the painting: reflections of the bridge, trees, sky, and shifting light.
The riverbank offers a contrasting texture, with hatched strokes and a visible build-up of material. The scene is vibrant and alive, yet completely serene in effect.
The longer and closer you look at this painting, the more it emerges.
About the artist:
Raoul Dosque, sometimes signed P.T. Raoul Dosque, was a French painter born in 1860 in Le Bouscat (Gironde) and died in 1937. He is primarily known as a landscape painter.
He first trained in Bordeaux under Léonce Chabry and Vincent Léopold Thénot, before continuing his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian, where he worked in the studio of Jules Joseph Lefebvre.
From the 1880s onward, he exhibited regularly at French art salons. He became a member of the Société des Amis des Arts de Bordeaux in 1882, and later a member of the Société des Artistes Français from 1899. In 1911, he joined an artists’ group known as L’Atelier in Bordeaux.
His work focuses mainly on landscapes, both coastal and rural, alongside a smaller number of portraits. His production includes numerous views of the Atlantic coast, notably the Bassin d’Arcachon, Soulac, and the Landes region, as well as scenes of rural life.
Works by Raoul Dosque are held in public collections, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux and the Musée Borda in Dax.
