Vue de Campagne

19th-century French School oil on wood panel attributed to Léon Victor Dupré (1816-1879). The work is smooth to the touch.

Several brushstrokes and split volumes bringing the landscape to life. The light-work is mastered with a stunning radiance entering from the sky center and refracting to the left and right. The dark green palette is in total harmony with its interior velvet frame and the gold chrome moldings of the mainframe.

More about the artist: Léon Victor Dupré is a Barbizon School french landscape painter born in 1816 and who died in 1879. His older brother, Jules Dupré (1812-1889), introduced him to painting. He finally set up his own studio in Paris and became friends with Théodore Rousseau, Constable, Turner, Crome and Bonington, the great landscape painters of the time.

He won third prize at the Salon of 1849. Later, in the 1850's, he began to paint rustic scenes of nature, his new favourite subject. An outdoor artist, he traveled across the entirety of France, painting the river banks and stormy skies of Berry, Limousin and Normandy.
